Most memorable sporting achievement
Winning the Wimbledon singles title at age 17 and becoming world number one at age 18. "I don't think anyone expected me to win Wimbledon at 17," she said. "And no one expected me to be number one by 18. Just the fact you are number one puts a smile on your face. It's something I've dreamed of all my life." (bradenton.com 23/08/05)

General
GIVING BACK
In August 2006 she started the Maria Sharapova Foundation, aimed at helping at risk children around the world achieve their dreams. "It goes towards children that don't get the opportunity to do the things that they dream of and want to do," she said. "One of the greatest things about being an athlete and making money is realising that you can help." During the 2005 Australian Open, she donated the value of the Porsche Cayenne car [approx USD56,300] she won at 2004 Tour Championships to those affected by the Russian school hostage crisis in Beslan, and in December 2004 she participated in a tennis exhibition in Florida with fellow players Angela Haynes, Maria Kirilenko, Nicole Vaidisova, Rennae Stubbs, Jennifer Capriati and Florida state governor Jeb Bush to raise money for the Florida Hurricane Relief Fund. (WTA, 25 May 2006; mariasharapova.com, usopen.org, 06 Sep 2006)

NATURAL LEFTY
She is naturally left-handed and played left-handed for six months at the age of 10 before switching back to her right hand. She can sometimes be seen hitting left-handed forehands during her matches. (mariasharapova.com, 10 Sep 2007)

GRUNTS
She has come under heavy scrutiny for the range of grunts and high-pitched shrieks she lets out during her matches. Sections of the press dubbed her 'Maria Shriek-apova' and the 'Belle of the Decibel', but she defended herself and said the noises were sometimes unfortunate but hardly anything new. "I try not to make noise," she said. "But it's just something I've been doing all my life. It's something that I try to control but my mouth doesn't control the way I play. It's just a mouth.''
