General
GUN DESIGNER
In 1993 while working for a weapons importer he developed a gun named the 'Schumann Design'. Italian company Pardini manufactured the gun, a .22 rapid fire pistol, and many of his competitors used the weapon against him in competition. In 2004 the International Shooting Sport Federation [ISSF] altered its rules to stop the use of pistols that he had developed. (ISSF News, 01 Jan 2000; time.com, 11 Sep 2000; main-rheiner.de, 23 Aug 2004)

TECHNIQUE CHANGE
In 1996 and despite still winning major events he totally changed his technique, claiming it should have been impossible to hit anything the way he was rotating his body and arm. His remodelled technique was designed to make his shooting action cleaner. (ISSF News, 01 Jan 2000)

EARLY DAYS
Just 18 months after he started shooting he was East Germany's junior national champion in rapid fire pistol and by 1981 he was also East Germany's national champion. In 1982 he competed in the European Junior Championships in Rome, Italy, moved to Leipzig to train with Peter Eisenschmidt and quit his job as a car mechanic to avoid injuring his fingers. (ISSF News, 01 Jan 2000)
