Additional information
Reason for taking up this sport
He dreamed of being a baseballer then, one year he tried wrestling in the off-season. He broke his wrist in a fall and had to give up baseball. At the encouragement of a track coach, he tried athletics, starting as a sprinter. "I had to learn to love the sport but once I had the bug, I gave it 100%. I don't know how to do things by half measure." (Paris, 2003)
Superstitions / Rituals
Between 2000 and 2004 he always wore a flashing wristband which was given to him at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in Sydney. The wristband was a reminder of his poor performance at the 2000 Games and served as a motivating factor to do better at the 2004 Games, where he would win gold in the 400m hurdles. He donated the wristband to the IAAF for a charity auction in 2005.
