He battled leukaemia for five years from the age of seven and has been in remission since he was 12. He said: "The ironic part is that because of all the chemotherapy and drugs, my thyroid was only half functioning and that is why I am the size of a cox today. Without having had cancer, I would not be a world champion today." (Rowing Canada, 01 Dec 2003)

Additional information

Start of sporting career
He took up rowing on the Bay of Quinte with the Quinte Rowing Club in 1995. (brianpriceonline.com, 01 Jan 2009)

Reason for taking up this sport
He almost instantly fell in love with the sport and thrived on the fact he had so much influence on how fast the boat would go and how hard he could push his athletes.

"I saw rowing on TV and saw kids walking around town with rowing jackets on and I really wanted one. Essentially I got into rowing because I wanted the jacket!" (brianpriceonline.com, 01 Jan 2009; canadianathletesnow.ca, 12 Feb 2010)

Training
"Personally, I don't have a training regime. I attend all of the practices either with the Eights or watching in a coach's boat with our coach." (cityweekend.com.cn, 12 Aug 2008)

Sporting philosophy / motto
"There is a champion in each and every one of us, and we must continually strive for success in business, academics and our family life." (brianpriceonline.com, 01 Jan 2009)

"You have only failed when you have failed to try. Act as it were impossible to fail and it will be." (canadianathletesnow.ca, 12 Feb 2010)

Awards
He won the Rowing Canada International Achievement Award in 2007 and 2008. (brianpriceonline.com, 01 Jun 2008)

General
CAN FUND TESTIMONIAL
He is eligible for the CAN fund as a long-time National Rowing Team member. "This fund has literally extended my rowing career into my 30s. Without their support my days competing and winning internationally while supporting a young family would be extremely difficult." (canadianathletesnow.ca, 12 Feb 2010)

RETURN TO ROWING
He returned to competitive rowing in December 2010 after two years away from the sport to pursue a career in motivational speaking and spend more time with his young family. "I found you just couldn't replace the feeling of getting to the start line, the feeling two weeks before the worlds or Lucerne, when it is just deadly focused and you're refining minute details. It was that focused atmosphere that I realised I missed. I knew I would need to compete again on the international stage." (rowingnews.com, 28 Mar 2011)
