His mother Connie won road race gold at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and also competed in speed skating at the 1972 Olympic Winter Games in Sapporo. His father Davis won a bronze medal in the 100km team trial at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. He is a distant cousin of American gymnasts Paul and Morgan Hamm.
