He was on his way to the Sail Melbourne regatta from his home in Lake Macquarie, northern New South Wales at the time. INSPIRATIONAL DAD
His father Tony was the first recipient of a grant from the Australian Olympic Committee's [AOC] Athlete Family Support Programme. The initiative was designed to recognise the importance of personal support for athletes and celebrate the role sport plays in developing healthy family relationships. He nominated his father for a grant as a tribute to his whole family whose support he says helped him become an Olympian. "He is an incredible source of inspiration and made huge sacrifices, like increasing the mortgage, to afford the travel costs, equipment and boats I needed for training and competing. He also spent countless hours in the shed fixing and re-rigging the boats while teaching me many of the practical skills that now help me compete." His father spent the 5,000 Australian dollars [approx 4,500 USD] grant on travel costs to the 2008 Olympic Games to watch his son compete at the Games for the first time. (olympics.com.au, 18 Feb 2008)

BEIJING HEARTBREAK
He and former crewmate Ben Austin capsized just 100 metres from the finish line at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, costing both men what looked like certain gold medals. (LOCOG, 20 Jun 2012)
