INSPIRATIONAL DAD
His father Tony was the first recipient of a grant from the Australian Olympic Committee's [AOC] Athlete Family Support Programme. The initiative was designed to recognise the importance of personal support for athletes and celebrate the role sport plays in developing healthy family relationships. He nominated his father for a grant as a tribute to his whole family whose support he says helped him become an Olympian. "He is an incredible source of inspiration and made huge sacrifices, like increasing the mortgage, to afford the travel costs, equipment and boats I needed for training and competing. He also spent countless hours in the shed fixing and re-rigging the boats while teaching me many of the practical skills that now help me compete." His father spent the 5,000 Australian dollars [approx 4,500 USD] grant on travel costs to the 2008 Olympic Games to watch his son compete at the Games for the first time.
