Additional information

Start of sporting career
She grew up competing in equestrian sports [mainly eventing] and devoted herself to triathlon in 2002 after her horse was injured [she had competed in several triathlons since 2000 but not seriously]. She began triathlon training in Australia during a gap year between high school and university, as her mother was working in Sydney. (Athlete, 06 Aug 2011; ITU, 06 Aug 2011)

Reason for taking up this sport
She cycled from Sweden to Italy [in 19 days] because she wanted to test her fitness. She then completed a small triathlon in Sweden, which she says was not a great success. "I swam breast stroke all the way and was last out of the pool. I can't say I was hooked and kept on with my horse riding. It wasn't until 2002 that I started to actually do some training." After she began training, she says she was motivated by the desire to see if she could compete at international level. (Athlete, 06 Aug 2011; ITU, 06 Aug 2011)
