Reason for taking up this sport
"Because I was a chubby little fat kid, I started rowing with a friend from school because we thought it would be fun. We had a pretty fun first season rowing all of about 5km per training outing. We became more serious and we had a great group of people at the mercer Rowing Club from a bunch of different schools, just generally having a lot of fun." TWITTER RAP
He was warned by both the Chef de Mission of the New Zealand Olympic Team and the IOC president Jacques Rogge over his future conduct on Twitter after publishing an explosive tweet to Sunday Star-Times journalist Simon Plumb. The tweet read "F you are a DOUCHE BAG @ Simon-Plumb WTF are you doing trying to stir SHIT with HPSNZ...#DOYOUHAVEACOMPLEXABOUTSOMETHING". He reacted after an article written by Simon Plumb about the allegations around a flawed supplement programme run by the New Zealand Academy of Sport. Murray later apologised for his action. "The comment that was made, I really do need to apologise for that. I retracted it after I'd cooled down. I'd been out celebrating our third World Championship title and in hindsight I regret putting the message on Twitter." (stuff.co.nz, 11 Sep 2011)
EMULATING HIS HERO
He had mixed feelings when he was selected to the coxless four that was to compete at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens because he took the place of friend and mentor, Ian Smallman. "My first reaction when I found out actually was disappointment for Ian. He's a great friend of mine. I told him he had always been my yardstick and he just turned around and said 'well mate, you've passed me and you're the one everyone wants to knock off now'." (New Zealand Herald, 23 Jun 2004)
