Additional information

Start of sporting career
She first tried judo at age 12 after following her sister to the local club. She didn't like it at first, but gave it a second chance at age 14 and stuck with it. (aulamagna.pt, 30 May 2010)

Reason for taking up this sport
"If I had to pick one aspect, I'd say competition. I like the sport itself, and training, but most of the enjoyment for me comes from competitions. I tried athletics and football when I was younger, but in both cases the competition was poorly organised, non-existent, or I had to play with older girls. This was decisive in my preference for judo." (aulamagna.pt, 30 May 2010)

Ambitions
To win gold at 2012 Olympic Games in London. After her competitive career she would like to open a judo school. (aulamagna.pt, 30 May 2010)

Training
She trains in the morning before classes, and again at night after her studies. (aulamagna.pt, 30 May 2010)

Sporting philosophy / motto
"You must believe in yourself. Those that do will always earn their achievements. A strong psychological component is critical for success, and for that you must believe in yourself."
(aulamagna.pt, 30 May 2010)

Awards
In 2005 she was awarded the Olympic Medal Nobre Guedes, an award from the Portuguese Olympic Committee recognising outstanding achievements. (aaop.pt, 01 Oct 2011)

Previous Olympics

Beijing 2008, Athens 2004
