His parents Jutta and Folkert both competed at the Olympic Games. His mother [nee Weber] won a bronze medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, West Germany. His father also swam at the 1972 Games competing in the 200m butterfly and 4x200m freestyle relay events.
