His dad William represented the US in volleyball at the Pan American Games. His sister Joy McKienzie was an All-American setter at Long Beach State University and helped the team to the National Championship in 1993. She also played professional beach volleyball on the Bud Light four-person tour. She is assistant coach for the UCLA women's volleyball team and married volleyball player Matt Fuerbringer.
