Additional information
Reason for taking up this sport
"You know, it's funny because we weren't a swim family – it wasn't this thing where everyone did it. We didn't really start young or anything. Swimming is something we really liked and then in our family it developed as something we all did. But it was always a fun thing, not something where we ever competed against each other. We just had fun being on the same team, like in high school when the years overlapped, and we enjoyed our time together."

Sporting philosophy / motto
"The general way I approach life – take it as it is, and do your best. That's what swimming has helped me with, and how life has helped me with swimming; you take what is put in front of you, and you do the best you can with it. Every coach, and every teammate I have had, brings in some new ideas and different knowledge that I can learn and grow from. You want to take a bit of that from everyone you come in contact with, and learn how to be a better swimmer, better person, and better friend – and grow from every opportunity and interaction." General
MARRIAGE
He is engaged to marry fellow Auburn university swimmer Julianne McLane. They were engaged in September 2010 and in November 2011 he said they had planned to wed during the next Golden Goggles meet which they will miss. "More than anything, Julianne understands the sport and the commitment it takes to be really fast. Having her at my side to be able to talk me through frustrating weeks of training and down moments, in terms of racing, is obviously really helpful," he says. (usaswimming.org, 15 Nov 2011)
POST-2012 CAREER
When asked what his career will involve after the 2012 Olympics he said, "At this point, yes, I envision myself swimming after 2012 because I am still young and getting faster. So of course I hope to, but I don't know when that year will come that Julianne and I look at our lives and see what's best for our family, where we will want to go, and whether that includes competing as a professional swimmer. So post 2012, it will be a year-by-year thing." (usaswimming.org, 15 Nov 2011)
