DOPING CONTROVERSY
Prior to the 2003 Pan American Games, she tested positive for the banned steroid clostebol and was suspended for two years. She declared her innocence, claiming a doctor had applied a healing cream to a cut she received during a hair removal process. She was subsequently cleared of the offence by Brazil's Superior Sports Tribunal but the IAAF appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport [CAS] and it was decided the original suspension should stand. Maggi had a child in late 2004 and returned to international competition at the 2006 South American Championships where she won the long jump title.
