She played tennis at high school until her history teacher's wife, who was the crew coach, suggested she try rowing. "My first practice was in San Diego for our winter training trip and we went out in the eight. I remember thinking that I needed a seatbelt because I thought I was going to fall out of the boat. Also we were rowing by six's and when I was the pair sitting out I was trying my hardest to keep my blade off the water so that I wouldn't disturb the people rowing. Everyone was yelling at me but I didn't understand why, I thought I was doing a pretty good job keeping my blade off." (row2k.com, 24 Jul 2008)
