His coach when he first started the sport, 1975 [K4 10,000m] and 1979 [K2 1000m] world champion Olaf Soyland, because he taught him that it was possible to become one of the best, even though he was from a little town in Norway. General
HUNTER
In the Norwegian autumn he likes to hunt for deer, mountain grouse and ducks, even combining his two loves on occasion. "I have hunted for ducks from the kayak, which is a special experience," he said. (veraaslarsen.com, 21 Feb 2012)
COMEBACK
After the 2009 season, he decided to have a break from the sport and not race in 2010. He cited he had attained his goals with gold medals at the Olympics and World Championships, and needed time to decide whether to go for another Olympics.
On 18th August 2010 he announced to a Norwegian newspaper, that he was ready to make a comeback and have a go for the Olympics. (dagbladet.no, 18 Aug 2010)
