Start of sporting career

Reason for taking up this sport
He grew up on a farm around horses and animals. His father had three mares which he says he was constantly tending. He was expected to take over the farm from his father, but his love for horses was too strong and he wished to pursue an equestrian career. (lansink.be, 23 Aug 2011)

CHAMPION HORSE RETIRES
In July 2011 he retired his horse Cavalor Cumano in Aachen, in the same arena he won at the 2006 World Equestrian Games with the horse. He received a standing ovation from the 30,000 spectators during a farewell lap of honour in which the horse wore a specially made black jacket with the words 'Thank you Cumano' in gold across its flank. THE NETHERLANDS TO BELGIUM
He represented the Netherlands from 1986, competing at four Olympic Games, four World Championships and dozens of World Cups for his birth country.
