Additional information

Start of sporting career
He first started Grand Prix racing in 1992. He got his start in the horse business working in exchange for the opportunity to ride, eventually ending up as a working student for world-renowned coach George Morris in New Jersey. His early work gave him experience as a "catch rider", picking up mounts on horses with which he was unfamiliar. (canoe.ca, 08 Apr 2003, globalchampionstour.com, 29 Apr 2007)

Training
Apart from Canada, he also trains in Europe, where he is based in Belgium. (torreypinesstable.com, 21 Sep 2010)

General
HORSE PASSION
He was very successful as a junior and hunter rider, working with a number of top trainers including Roger Deslauriers, George Morris, Jay Hayes and Hugh Graham. His own natural eye for distance has made him very effective since entering the grand prix ring in 1992. Just one year later, he was named in the Canadian Equestrian Team. CANADA BEST
Eric has since represented Canada at four consecutive World Equestrian Games - 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2006, as well as at three Pan American Games including the 1999 games where he earned a team bronze medal and at the 2007 Pan Ams where he won team silver and Individual bronze. However, it was in his Olympic debut in 2008 where he won the individual gold medal riding the great Hickstead and helped Canada capture the Team Silver. These remarkable achievements represent the greatest-ever success of the Canadian Equestrian Team at the Olympic Games. (torreypinesstable.com, 21 Sep 2010)

PERFECT WEEK
In July 2010, he took over top spot on the all-time earnings list with a total of $2,730,502 in prize money. Moving to number one on the all-time money list capped off a fantastic week in the Olympic champion's career. On Thursday, July 8, he went to number one in the Rolex Rider Rankings. The same day, he and his Olympic horse, Hickstead, won the $35,000 D-Line Construction Cup. On the Friday, Lamaze guided Take Off to victory in the $31,000 Pepsi Challenge. The Saturday then saw Lamaze and Hickstead claim the $200,000 ATCO Power Queen Elizabeth II Cup. Having also won the $200,000 CN Reliability Grand Prix during the Spruce Meadows "National" Tournament in June, Lamaze earned a $50,000 bonus. (torreypinesstable.com, 11 Jul 2010)
