Additional information
Start of sporting career
She took up athletics in Saransk at the age of nine. (iaaf.org, 10 Aug 2011)
Reason for taking up this sport
"We were just taking a walk with my friends in the woods in Saransk when we met coach [Konstantin] Nacharkin, and he invited us to try out race walking. We were intrigued and came to a training session. My friends later gave up on it, but I didn't. I regularly took part in some local youth competitions – there are plenty of them in Mordovia - and I won some medals here and there. I enjoyed it and started considering it as my job."
