Reason for taking up this sport
She wanted to be a dancer, and was naturally talented at the samba and cha cha. Her godfather encouraged her to try fencing. "He kept saying, 'That's exactly what you should dedicate your life to,'" she recalls him saying. (redbull.com, 11 Nov 2010)

Training

General
SPOILS OF VICTORY
After she and her team mates won the gold medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, she received enough money to build herself a house. By contrast, her family home is a one-bedroom flat. The Ukrainian Fencing Association gave her a car with the Olympic rings emblazoned on the hood. She also accepted a seat in the Mykolayiv town council.
