General
FROM ETHIOPIA TO BAHRAIN
After catching the eye of a Switzerland-based manager at the Ethiopian National Junior Championships in 2002, she was invited to Switzerland to take part in a few races. Fearing that her relatively wealthy ethnic group, the Oromo, would be further exploited by the Ethiopian Government and that she wouldn't be allowed to travel abroad again if she returned home, she stayed in Switzerland and sought political asylum in May 2002, settling in Lausanne. As her refugee status prevented her competing outside Switzerland, she and her husband - in association with Lausanne's Athletissima director Jacky Delapierre - applied to get citizenship with four other countries - France, Turkey, Canada and Bahrain. Bahrain proposed a citizenship change that would free her up for competition on the grounds that she changed her name. She became Maryam Yusuf Jamal in January 2005. (Bloomberg.com, 07 Jul 2008)
