Reason for taking up this sport
Her mother took her to their local swimming club and gymnastics club. She didn't have time for both and chose synchronised swimming. (trud.ru, 16 Aug 2010)

Training
Her basic training revolves around a pattern of five days of training followed by one day off. A typical day of training involves general physical and choreographic training in the gym in the mornings, vertical warm-ups and swimming training in the middle of the day and another evening session depending on the number of programmes they are rehearsing. She trains eight to nine hours a day. (Sports Express, 27 Feb 2006; trud.ru, 16 Aug 2010)

General
SICK OF THE WATER
She admits that long periods of training, sometimes up to five hours without a break, often get to her. "Sometimes I feel sick just at the sight of water and need an extra day off." (Sports Express, 01 Aug 2006)

HOLD YOUR BREATH
Holding your breath underwater is a basic requirement in synchronised swimming, although competitions are now subject to serious restrictions after blackouts. "I can hold my breath for up to three and a half minutes underwater if I don't move," she said. "The technically acceptable elements, however, restrict the underwater non-breathing period to 45 seconds." (Sports Express, 01 Aug 2006)

THE HAIR SECRET
It takes her about 40 minutes to style her hair before competitions, a procedure she says is long and not very pleasant. "Hair style sprays are too sensitive to water," she said. "So we have to comb our hair with vegetable gelatin, the same thing they make jelly meat with." (Sports Express, 01 Aug 2006)

CHOOSING THE RIGHT MUSIC
Finding the right music for performances is always a team decision. "Once one of us finds a tune, we get together and discuss it," she said. "If everyone is happy with it, it becomes the music base for a new programme." (Sports Express, 01 Aug 2006)
