General
KOREA'S 'BLIND' ARCHER
He has 20/100 vision in his right eye and 20/200 in his left eye, meaning he is legally blind in his left eye and needs to be 10 times closer to see objects clearly compared to someone with perfect vision. "With my vision, when I look at the target, it looks as if different colour paints have been dropped in water. The boundaries are not that clear and the lines between the colours are very blurred," he says. Despite his poor eyesight, he refuses to wear glasses or contact lenses and relies on 'feel' and being able to see the bright colours of the target. He has also refused offers of free eye surgery to improve his vision. "I've practised using glasses before but actually it makes me feel less comfortable when I shoot. When I look down the range at the target all I can do is try to distinguish between the different colours. If I couldn't see the colours, now that would be a problem." According to the BBC he is known as 'Korea's Blind Archer'. (myvisiontest.com, 19 Apr 2010; acbvi.org, 2012; news.bbc.co.uk, 2012)
RAIN AND GENTLEMEN IN 2012
When asked in 2011 what he knew of London ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games, he replied "Two things. It's always raining and it's a country of gentlemen." (news.bbc.co.uk, 15 Aug 2011)
