ROYAL CONNECTIONS
He rented a house and stables on Princess Anne's Gatcombe Park Estate in England around 2000. He has known Princess Anne since he was 20 when he came under the patronage of her then husband, Captain Mark Phillips. Phillips, the adviser to the USA equestrian team, helped Hoy prepare for the 1979 Burghley three-day event in which they were both competing. (Australian Women's Weekly November, 2000)

COUPLE CONFLICTS
He and his then wife Bettina became the first husband and wife to have competed against each other in three-day eventing at the Olympic Games. At the 2004 Games in Athens he represented Australia while she competed for Germany. (Sydney Morning Herald, 13 May 2006)
