Start of sporting career
He began rowing in 1997. "I was born and raised in Victoria BC, the home of the Canadian men's rowing team. The house I grew up in was down the street from Silken Laumann [Canadian women's single sculler], and only a 10 minute walk from the Victoria Training Centre at Elk Lake. Growing up, it seemed only a matter of time before I tried rowing," he said. (rowingone.com, 26 Jul 07; worldrowing.com, 04 Aug 2010)
Reason for taking up this sport

BACK TO EIGHTS FOR LONDON 2012
After a few years rowing in the single scull, he moved back to the eight man event in July 2011. Rowing Canada Aviron high performance director, Peter Cookson, said the decision was made in order to capitalise on Canada's potential medal opportunities at the 2012 Olympic Games. Howard was a 2008 Olympic gold medallist in the men's eight. (rowingnews.com, 19 Jul 2011)
POST-LONDON 2012 STUDY PLANS
"I plan on starting medical school in the [northern hemisphere] Autumn of 2012. I am excited to go back to school. I never thought I would miss studying, but I actually do – well, maybe not having to write exams." (worldrowing.com, 25 Aug 2010)
THREE-YEAR UNBEATEN HARVARD RUN
In his four years attending Harvard University he only lost two races, and both of those came in his freshman year. He was a part of the all-conquering heavyweight eight that went undefeated in varsity competition for three years. During that run they won four Eastern Sprints titles and three national titles. This feat is impressive because student turnover means new members join the crew at the beginning of each season, making each crew vastly different to the one that competed the year before. "I never thought all this would happen," said Howard. "I came [to Harvard] just wanting to make the freshman boat." (thecrimson.com, 09 May 2005)
