BLOOD PROBLEMS
He missed the 2004 World Championships in Les Gets, France, after he returned a high level of red blood cells during a blood test. The Union Cycliste Internationale [UCI] declared him unfit to race but Hermida argued his family had a history of fluctuating red blood cell levels and that he had sent letters to the UCI in 1997 and 1998 to explain this. The UCI refused to overturn their decision and he was not allowed to race. "They fight doping, but sometimes they fight the riders. They say it is for my health, but I feel good, I feel strong. So I don't know why I have to stop," said Hermida. (cyclingnews.com, 13 Sep 2004)
