She became the first Belgian woman to win an Olympic gold medal in athletics with her victory in the high jump in Beijing in 2008. The gold was also the first for Belgium in athletics since the 1964 Games in Tokyo. (iaaf.org, 23 Aug 2008)

General
RETIREMENT AND COMEBACK
She retired from competition twice to give birth to her daughters. She retired the first time a few months after winning gold at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. She gave birth to her daughter Lotte in June 2009 and returned to the sport in February 2010. She competed at the 2010 European Championships while pregnant with her second child and retired again in August 2010.
