He quit swimming after the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games claiming he no longer had the motivation, and took up triathlon. He started swimming for fun again in January 2011, and it wasn't long before he was asking advice from his coach and wife about whether he should get back into it. His wife asked him whether he would be frustrated at 40 if he didn't get back into swimming and his reply was yes. She said to him "I don't want to live with that guy, so get your suit and go back in the water." (nbcolympics.com, 22 Jun 2012)
