After winning the world championships in 2001, he decided to move to the United States to pursue a coaching opportunity in California. "So I was thinking 'OK, what next?' I didn't want to retire just like that." He wants to improve the level of badminton in the US and change its image as a backyard hobby. "The goal is to improve the level here. Make noise at the professional level." (articles.latimes.com, 17 Dec 2011).

MAKING HISTORY FOR USA
He won the USA's first gold in badminton at the world championship in 2005 as Badminton World Federation rules allow a player to represent their chosen country prior to becoming fully certified citizens. In 2011 he passed the citizenship test and became a US citizen. He hopes to win the first gold in badminton for the US in the 2012 Olympic Games with his doubles partner Howard Bach (usatoday.com, 21 May 2012; teamusa.org, 30 Oct 2011)
