U.S. backstroker, Lea Maurer. (USA Swimming, 08 Jul 2008)

Most influential person in career
His family. "My family members inspire me in different ways. As a swim coach, my mother understands swimming from a teacher's perspective as well as the family perspective. My father and brother are always so proud of my accomplishments. My sister was a division one and Olympic trials qualifier, so she's experienced almost everything I'm about to experience and can offer advice, which helps." (USA Swimming, 04 Nov 2006)

General
ROMANTIC PROPOSAL
He proposed to his girlfriend and fellow US swimmer Annie Chandler on the medal podium at the 2012 Missouri Grand Prix. (dailymail.co.uk, 14 Feb 2012)

DUTCH HERITAGE
He was born in the USA but is also a Dutch citizen because his parents are from the Netherlands. Because of his dual citizenship, he could have chosen to swim for the Netherlands. He said he chose to swim for the US because it was the more challenging option. "I sometimes like easy routes. But this is one challenge that I did want to undertake. I wanted it to mean something if I swam in the Olympics. I didn't want to just get handed a spot. A lot of people I've known will just try to represent a country they're barely related to. I don't think that's the true spirit of what the Olympics are all about." (nytimes.com, 13 Jul 2008)
