General
OLYMPIC INSPIRATION
He travelled to Beijing for the 2008 Olympic Games as Great Britain's specialist sculling reserve, covering both the double and single. "I sat in the grandstand watching. It was a major change to my rowing mindset. I'd always said that I wanted to go to the Olympics, because that's what you say, but it wasn't until I saw these guys getting their medals that I realised I wanted more." (worcesternews.co.uk, 16 Jul 2008; guardian.co.uk, 14 Oct 2011)

FROM SCULL TO SWEEP
As the spare at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, he sat in a number of different boats during training, including the single oars, and discovered some unknown talent as a sweep oarsman. "The year after, I swapped from scull to sweep. It felt like the right thing to do. It felt much more natural." (eveshamobserver.co.uk, 26 Sep 2011; bbc.co.uk, 21 Feb 2012)
