Additional information

Start of sporting career
She took up rowing in 2008 at the Minerva Rowing Club in Bath. (britishrowing.org, 24 Feb 2012)

Reason for taking up this sport
She applied to UK Sport's Sporting Giants talent identification programme, which was launched in 2007. She was assessed and then placed on to British Rowing's Start programme. (britishrowing.org, 24 Feb 2012)

Ambitions
To become the first British woman to win a rowing gold medal at the Olympic Games. (thisissomerset.co.uk, 11 Feb 2012)

Training
She trains six days a week and a typical training day includes water sessions in the morning and weights sessions in the afternoon, with any necessary specifics or physio in between. She also likes to do a small training session by herself on her day off. (guardian.co.uk, 24 Jun 2011)

Sporting philosophy / motto
"It's hard to even describe to people how physical [rowing] is. You're always putting your body under so much stress and you're always so tired that you're generally quite fragile, emotionally." (news.bbc.co.uk, 23 Sep 2010)

Awards
By claiming a silver medal with Heather Stanning in the women's pair at the 2010 World Rowing Championships in New Zealand, just two years after she started rowing, she became the first athlete discovered by UK Sport's Sporting Giants talent identification scheme to win a medal at a senior World Championships. (bbc.co.uk, 09 Feb 2012; britishrowing.org, 24 Feb 2012)

General
WHIRLWIND
She was chosen through the Sporting Giants programme because she was "tall and sporty" and admits that her progress through the ranks of British Rowing had been unusual. "I don't think it's very common coming into rowing that fast. It's been a bit of a whirlwind as well, I still feel quite new to it all and because I'm so new to the sport I still feel like I have a heck of a lot of improvements to make." (guardian.co.uk, 24 Jun 2011; thisissomerset.co.uk, 11 Feb 2012)

TEACHER
Prior to her involvement with British Rowing she worked as a Physical Education teacher in Bath. (britishrowing.org, 24 Feb 2012)
