Due to clouding of his eye fluid, images and light appeared distorted and he was prescribed Selenium to alleviate the clouding and was given glasses equipped with lights to stimulate his photo receptors. The combination helped almost immediately and at the 1997 European Championships in Seville, Spain, he won the 100m butterfly title. (NBC Olympics, 29 Jun 2001)
