COACHING MADONNA
He taught popstar Madonna how to ride, but thought it was a wind-up when she first called to find out if he was available for lessons. "She didn't have a clue who I was or what I did, but she heard I did it quite well," he said. "At first, she just wanted to gallop and have fun but she is passionate about her riding and I wouldn't put it past her to go eventing." (telegraph.co.uk, 25 Aug 2007)

ACCIDENT
During the cross-country at the 1992 Badminton Horse Trials his mount Briarlands Pippin lost a shoe before a water jump, slipped and flipped upside down on entry. The accident led to Briarlands Pippin being put down after suffering a broken neck and had massive affect on him. "It was probably the most horrific thing that had ever happened to me," he said. "It was the worst thing imaginable to go home without your horse. The sense of loss and the feeling that you've let that horse down is a very, very empty moment." His first reaction was to hide but his mother wouldn't let him and told him he just had to get on and face it. "The press were quite vile to me. Badminton had lost three horses that year and I was the youngest and least experienced. The whole experience was very perturbing." (telegraph.co.uk, 25 Aug 2007)
