Additional information
Start of sporting career
He grew up around shooting and all of the men in his family were hunters however he did not realise it was a sport until his freshman year of high school when he started competing at age 14. (USOC, 17 Mar 2003; teamusa.org, 2 Aug 2010)
Reason for taking up this sport
He first became interested in shooting competitively through the influence of Federal Bureau of Investigation [FBI] firearms instructor Paul Adamowski as a 14-year-old. Although he already enjoyed shooting, Adamowski told him that college scholarships were available for the top competitors in the sport. (USOC, 17 Mar 2003)

SHARING GUNS
He realised something was wrong with his air rifle and .22 when he was training at Fort Benning in preparation for the 2004 Olympic Games. They weren't shooting correctly and it looked as though someone had sabotaged the chamber. He borrowed a rifle from a former teammate from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Amber Darland. He won both events at the trials and continues to use her rifle even now. (teamusa.org, 02 Aug 2010)
WRONG TARGET
At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, he was leading the final of the 50m rifle three position event with one round left when he accidentally fired at the wrong target. Instead of firing at the target in lane two, he aimed his shot at the target in the third lane. Needing a score of 8.0 to win the gold medal, he was given a zero by the judges and dropped to eighth position in the overall standings. "I was just worrying about calming myself down and just breaking a good shot, and so I didn't even look at the [lane] number. I probably should have. I will from now on." (MSNBC, 22 Aug 2004)
PREMATURE CAPITULATION
At the Beijing Olympic Games, as in 2004, he led the field in the final of the 50m rifle three position event needing only a 6.7 with his last shot of the round- where his lowest score had been 9.7- to secure a gold. Unbelievably he fired his rifle prematurely and hit a 4.4 which saw him slip out of the medals into fourth position. (hunting.about.com, 24 Aug 2008)
BIATHLON CURIOUS
Due to his love of both skiing and shooting he has considered competing in biathlon. (hunting.about.com, 24 Aug 2008)
