Start of sporting career
He started shooting using plastic toy equipment when he was still in a nappy. He had his own compound bow at the age of seven. He began recurve archery in 2005 whilst on a camp in the United States. (USOC, 08 May 2007; nbcolympics.com, 18 Jul 2008; USA Today, 04 May 2011)

General
OLYMPIC SWITCH
He use a compound bow until 2005 when he switched to a recurve bow - the only bow used in the Olympic Games. The change came about at a camp in 2005 when he had a malfunction with his equipment in the form of a snapped string. He was unable to fix it and while waiting for a replacement a friend allowed him to use one of his recurve bows. He used it and immediately was noticed as having potential by coaches. He was soon convinced to make a switch from compound to recurve after talking with his coaching mentors. (USOC, 08 May 2007; nbcolympics.com, 18 Jul 2008)
HIP PROBLEMS
He was diagnosed with Perthes disease, a disease of the hips, at the age of five. He had to wear special leg braces for over a year so that his hips could heal. He still has issues with his hips and reinjured one in April 2008. (web.mac.com/bradyellison, 11 Jun 2011)
SHOOT FOR THE CURE
In 2010 he set up the Brady Ellison Shoot for the Cure campaign to help raise funds for breast cancer research. The campaign is part of the Susan G. Komen Foundation and sees Ellison donate $100 every time he reaches the podium at an event and $1 for every X or 10 he shoots. He also uses a pink bow in competition. (teamusa.org, 06 Aug 2010)
GETTING INKED
After he made the 2008 Olympic team, he had his right forearm tattooed with the Olympic rings so people could see it when he shot. (USA Today, 04 May 2011)
