In 2007 he was hit by a water skier while training. The injuries he sustained in the collision led to him being airlifted to hospital where he could not move for three days. He says he barely regained the feeling in his fingers and toes and later he was found to have cracked two vertebrae in the crash. (nzherald.co.nz, 19 Sep 2007)

At the Beijing Games, in the men's single scull, he won bronze, but after his race he was carried into a waiting ambulance, after being carried by life raft after his race, clearly suffering from his illness. He was also seen vomiting. He was, however, able to stand to be awarded his medal. (NZ Herald, 18 Sep 2008)
