Injuries

During the warm-up of a London Grand Prix event in July 2009, fellow competitor Tomasz Majewski approached Cantwell to say "hi." The official who was standing between the two athletes was holding the shot and accidentally dropped it on Cantwell's foot. At the time it was suspected that he had broken his toe, but was cleared with bruising. (berlin.iaaf.org 16 Aug 2009)

He suffered from a career-threatening hand injury in 2002. He tore a tendon sheath in his right ring finger and was considering surgery or even ending his career. He couldn't close his hand without pain. The pills he took for the pain ate at his stomach for one and a half years. Eventually the injury was healed with therapy. (USA Today, 21 Jun 2004)

Additional information

Start of sporting career
He didn't have a particular interest in sport but in the seventh grade he took up basketball, football and athletics. (Columbia Daily Tribune, 08 Jul 2004)

Reason for taking up this sport
By the time he was a sophomore, he had started winning athletics meets, but his future looked like it might be in football. He tore his anterior cruciate ligament as a junior and decided his best chance at a college scholarship was in athletics.

When he started competing he was technically raw, the only real expertise he had gained in the shot put was from watching instructional videotapes. He used his strength to throw well as a high school senior and eventually he gained the attention of Missouri University. (Columbia Daily Tribune, 08 Jul 2004)

Ambitions
To break the world record. (Columbia Daily Tribune, 08 Jul 2004)

Hero
US shot putter John Godina. (USOC June 2004)

Sporting philosophy / motto
"I can go out and throw in a forest, or I can go out and throw on a boat, it doesn't matter to me... It's you versus the tape measure. It's black and white. It's not anybody you're throwing against, it's the tape measure." (mutigers.cstv.com, 22 Mar 2007)
