There were no thoughts about the future. It was just like any other sport in school. There were no real aspirations to go on and compete in the Olympics." (telegraph.co.uk, 10 May 2011)

Reason for taking up this sport
He comes from an athletic family, his father was a runner and his mother was a swimmer. His older brother Alistair introduced him to triathlon. (Athlete, 07 Aug 2011; profsports.com, 07 Aug 2011)

General
FAMILY AFFAIR IN LONDON
He finished third at the 2011 World Championship Series London event to secure qualification for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Older brother Alistair won the event, also securing Olympic qualification: "Alistair keeps on improving and trains hard. He still beats me in our Saturday morning run session," Jonathan says. "It's a tall ask, but I've got to believe I can beat him. But in the Olympics there'll be 64 other people to race against - I can't concentrate on him." (news.bbc.co.uk, 05 Feb 2011; ITU, 07 Aug 2011)

BROTHERS IN ARMS
When competing internationally or for their club Sartrouville [which Jonathan joined in 2011], the two brothers work together for a Brownlee one-two finish. In June 2011 at the World Championship Series Madrid event the brothers finished first [Alistair] and second [Jonathan] with Alistair stopping and waiting for Jonathan at the finish line so they could cross together, arms around one another, with Alistair crossing just one step ahead of Jonathan. Also in June 2011 the brothers finished one-two [Alistair first] at the European Championships in Pontevedra, despite Alistair picking up a puncture: "Jonny slowed down, which slowed the front pack down, and that gave me the chance to change my wheel and catch up again. There are a lot of triathletes who would have just kept going in that situation," Alistair said.
