Our vision

Our vision is to engage, energise and involve everybody in the region and beyond under the banner of the London 2012 Games, to achieve a lasting sporting, cultural and health legacy for all.

Achieving our vision

Yorkshire and Humber is determined to play its part in making the 2012 Games a resounding success and to derive real benefits from them before, during and long after the event itself.

Our strategy does not set new targets. We aim to make a difference by joining together areas of work, helping organisations to raise levels of performance and to hit and exceed existing targets.

We are focusing on five key areas to achieve our vision:

  • Putting sport centre-stage – We want to increase sports and physical activity, especially for those who do the least now. We will help the region meet the ‘Sports Plan for Yorkshire’ targets to get more people involved in physical activity and sport. We aim to help narrow gaps in participation between different groups and increase the number of sportspeople from the region competing with the national team.
  • Developing healthy and united communities – We want to create healthier, inclusive communities, with people working together to create bright prospects for the future.
  • Creating a carnival of culture – We want people to see that Yorkshire and Humber is outward-facing, culturally rich, and internationally connected – a great place to live and visit.
  • Enhancing our profile and tourist potential – We aim to increase visitor spending, especially from targeted countries and in niche markets through leisure and events.
  • Producing winners in business – We will use the Games to encourage businesses to export more, and a strong sports industry sector with growing numbers of firms, jobs and increasing output.

Planning and delivery – making it happen

The Yorkshire Committee for the 2012 Games is led by former Yorkshire Forward Chief Executive Martin Havenhand.

With our partners, we are producing a comprehensive strategy for a coordinated approach towards success for the 2012 Games.

The committee includes representatives from Yorkshire Culture, Yorkshire Forward, Yorkshire Tourist Board, Sport England Yorkshire, Yorkshire and Humber Regional Assembly, Government Office Yorkshire and Humber and the five cities of Bradford, Hull, Leeds, Sheffield and York.

Martin Havenhand, Executive Chair of the Yorkshire Committee for the 2012 Games

'What a thrill it was to be a part of Yorkshire and Humber’s ‘Back the Bid’ campaign to see London win the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

For someone whose background is in Sports and Leisure it was a wonderful feeling to know that in under seven years we would be witnessing the world’s biggest sporting event on home soil.

It really is a fantastic once in a lifetime opportunity for the whole of the UK to have the Games in London in 2012.’
