Our vision

Our vision for the South West puts people at its heart and creates a lasting, discernible community legacy from the 2012 Games.

Our vision is ambitious and far reaching – extending way beyond the Games themselves.

We want to make sure that the benefits extend well into the future and capture the excitement, passion and power of the Games to change lives.

Achieving our vision

We have five key ‘strategic flames’ for achieving our vision:

  • Business opportunity – We want to ensure that South West businesses are ready to compete to maximise the procurement opportunities offered by the 2012 Games, leaving a legacy of improved businesses throughout the region, underpinned by an ethos of inclusion and equality.
  • Tourism and regional image – We will build on the tourism offer to overseas and domestic visitors in a sustainable manner by improving our quality, welcome and services. We will showcase all that South West England has to offer on a world stage in order to make our region the first choice to visit.
  • Sporting opportunity – We aim to achieve the highest sport and recreational participation rates in the UK by 2012. We will also support our elite athletes to help them reach their full potential through the support of the whole community.
  • Cultural celebration – We want to create a magical, vibrant and inspiring programme of events and activities as part of the Cultural Olympiad, celebrating the uniqueness of the region and unlocking the creative potential in all of us.
  • Community engagement – We will contribute to the development of sustainable communities using the catalyst of the London 2012 Games. We want the Games to touch each and every person in the South West.

Five cross-cutting flames underpin our five strategic flames. These are integral to our work and include:

  • education and skills;
  • strong and inclusive communities;
  • innovation;
  • environment; and
  • equal opportunities.

The South West is firmly committed to helping the London 2012 Organising Committee to achieve its wider aims and objectives.

We will ensure that the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Sailing events, that will be held in Weymouth and Portland, Dorset, set against the stunning backdrop of our World Heritage Jurassic Coast, are the best ever.

Director for the 2012 Games, Guy Lavender

The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy is a perfect example of partnership. Funded by South West RDA, Sport England South West and the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), the Academy will be the venue for the Sailing events at the 2012 Games.

Over the last six years the Academy has contributed £26.4million into the local economy - or £14m Gross Value Added (GVA) per head.

The impact of spending by visitors and competitors at the Academy has generated an overall increase in the demand of local firms of around £3.2m - an increase of just over £1.7m in GVA. It is estimated to have created 56 full time equivalent jobs and 16 business units.

The Academy is already hosting a series of international events and in 2006 hosted the Volvo Youth Sailing International Sailing Federation World Championship. The Sail for Gold Olympic Regatta was held in 2006 and will run again in 2007, 2008 and 2009. From 2007 this will coincide with the Southampton Boat Show.

South West England Director for the 2012 Games, Guy Lavender said:

‘We want to make sure that the benefits of the London 2012 Games extend well into the future in the South West. We are committed to putting in place real programmes and projects that will inspire a generation and change lives so that everyone can share in the excitement, passion and power of the Games.

‘We have a team based approach that is already paying dividends and the hosting of the sailing events for the 2012 Games on our World Heritage Coast means that we can really capitalise on our regional strengths and benefit our communities.

‘Coupled with the support and energy of tenacious and talented individuals across the region we will win gold in every flame.’
