Our vision

We will use the 2012 Games to get young people into sport at both a domestic and international level, with the ultimate aim of winning medals at the Games. We want to create better facilities to help athletes, leaving a legacy for the future. And we want to go beyond sport, to benefit the people of our nation economically and socially.

Achieving our vision

The Northern Ireland Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) has developed a strategy to get the most out of the Games.

There are six key parts to the strategy:

  • Creating sporting success – We will concentrate on identifying talent and developing our talented athletes so they can reach their full potential. We will invest in improving facilities and aim to stage top sporting events.
  • Taking part in cultural activities – We want to engage people in the whole programme of sporting and cultural events created by the 2012 Games, including the Opening Ceremony and Torch Relay.
  • Games-time events – We hope to be able to host sports events during the 2012 Games.
  • Promoting volunteering – we want more volunteers in Northern Ireland – both for the Games and beyond. We are developing a strategy to make this happen.
  • Boosting business and the economy – We will make sure businesses and the wider public understand the contract opportunities of the Games. Winning Games contracts will create new jobs and generate millions of pounds for the region by 2012.
  • Leaving a legacy - Each of these areas will provide a lasting legacy for the people of Northern Ireland. The plans we develop and put into action will not just focus on the Games, but also far beyond 2012.

Planning and delivery - making it happen

A taskforce has been created to make sure each part of the strategy is dealt with.
