Our vision

The North West will build upon its proud sporting and cultural life to contribute to an inspirational 2012 Games.

The region will gain maximum economic, sporting and social benefit and provide local people with every opportunity to engage with the Games.

How will we achieve our vision?

We will concentrate on six key areas to achieve our vision:
  • Getting active – We aim to increase the number of people taking part in sport and recreation, especially those who are often harder to reach. We will help people with sporting talent to achieve their full potential.
  • Growing business – We want to make the most of the business opportunities, encouraging our local businesses to be more competitive. This will increase growth and productivity of the whole North West economy.
  • Increasing tourism – Visitors will be attracted to our region as we are hosting the Football event at Old Trafford and creating an exciting cultural programme. We will use this opportunity to raise standards as we showcase our region to the world.
  • Creating a cultural programme – Our Culture team will create an exciting programme, building on the focus on Liverpool, European City of Culture in 2008. We will work closely with the London 2012 team to develop our cultural programme, tying in research from the Northwest Cultural Observatory.
  • Encouraging volunteers – We will use the Games to increase the number of individuals involved in sports volunteering, through our Northwest Volunteering Strategy.
Working with the London 2012 Organising Committee and its key partners, we will develop a pre-volunteering programme to make sure our region makes the most out of the Games opportunities.
  • Staging major events – We will use the Games to stage more major events in the region. This fits with the aims of the region’s current ‘Strategy for Major Events’ and helps in achieving the broader objectives linked to the 2012 Games in the region.

Planning and delivery - making it happen

The North West Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and Sport England have joined regional partners to form a Steering Group for the 2012 Games.

We are currently developing a comprehensive benefits plan for the North West.

We work closely with regional business, tourism and cultural organisations, choosing partners to lead on specific topic areas and making sure everyone in the region knows about our work.
