Our vision

The London 2012 Games provide the North East with a global opportunity to celebrate its passion for sport and showcase its world- class places and talented people.

They will inspire participation in sport and physical activity and leave tangible legacies for current and future generations.

How will we achieve our vision?

We will achieve our vision with a network of eight groups delivering one of our regional themes:

  • Developing business and procurement – We want to enable North East businesses to be ‘fit for purpose’ to successfully access procurement opportunities in the lead up to, during and after the London 2012 Games.
  • Invigorating cultural programmes – We want to ensure that people make the most of the cultural opportunities associated with the London 2012 Games and that these opportunities help people support positive change in their lives.
  • Boosting tourism and image – We want to ensure that in the global spotlight afforded by the London 2012 Games the region’s ‘Passionate People and Passionate Places’ campaign is given maximum exposure.
  • Providing skills and skilled workers – We want to develop a well-trained, highly qualified and employable workforce capable of meeting the skills demands associated with the London 2012 Games. This will in turn complement the long-term growth and productivity of the regional sports sector and wider economy.
  • Nurturing sports talent and improving performance – We want to ensure that regional infrastructure and talent pathways inspire participants to reach their full potential, including future Olympians and Paralympians, before, during and after the London 2012 Games.
  • Getting young people active – We want to create an environment within which children and young people will be inspired to believe they could participate and achieve their full potential in sport and physical activity.
  • Improving sports facilities – We will work to ensure that a network of world class, accessible regional facilities and support infrastructure is available for the people of North East England, events and visiting teams before, during and after the London 2012 Games.
  • Improving health – We want to increase participation in physical activity across the regional population to improve physical and mental wellbeing and reduce health inequalities.

Planning and delivery – making it happen

We work closely with regional partners from across the sporting spectrum and in the public and private sectors, especially One NorthEast and Sport England.

Together we are building a programme to help the region gain as many benefits as possible from the Games – in sport, business, culture and beyond.

A regional forum meets every six months to discuss plans and progress.

Judith Rasmussen, Regional Director at Sport England North East

‘The Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in 2012 will be the biggest sporting event ever held in this country and it is our intention here in the North East to be part of the celebrations and to use the impact and excitement of the Games to inspire the region to be active.’

Helping business

One North East has set up a three-part structure to help businesses of all sizes make the most of 2012 Games opportunities:

Know the Score – making businesses aware of opportunities.

Fit for Opportunities – giving the skills and being totally prepared to seize any opportunity.

Work Together to Compete – showcasing our partnership working and innovative potential.

Business Link Tees Valley is at the centre of the Fit for Opportunities category and is the point of contact for general procurement advice.

This includes helping small and medium-sized businesses get ready and develop skills to bid for tenders and opportunities offered through large-scale procurement, including the Games.
