Our vision
The East Midlands' vision is to create a lasting legacy for the region from the 2012 Games.
We will do this by raising participation in sport, increasing sports tourism visitors, increasing the number of local volunteers and supporting businesses to win public sector contract opportunities.
How will we achieve this
- Business - We are helping to establish a Business Opportunities Network to promote Games-related opportunities for local businesses, ensuring they have the support to access these opportunities.
- Children and Young People - We will use the Games to inspire young people to participate in sport and culture. This will be achieved through a ‘One World’ programme of activities, events, and international links that helps young people understand their role in global society.
- Community Sport Development – We will use the Games to ensure a legacy of more people taking part in sport and active recreation. A series of events will be developed to inspire more people to take up sport on a regular basis
- Culture - We will celebrate the region’s cultural diversity as part of the Cultural Olympiad. As well as supporting large public events and festivals we will help communities to develop and deliver their own events.
- Health - We will use the power of the Games to raise awareness of the benefits of getting active. We will also work closely with business to find ways of tackling ill health in the workplace.
- Performance Sport - We will use the power of the Games to inspire our talented athletes to greater achievement. We will establish clear and sustainable pathways for for talented sportspeople to develop their full potential, keeping the East Midlands at the forefront of elite sports performance
- Visitor Economy - We will develop the region’s tourism offer by developing closer links with sporting and cultural events and promoting the region to 2012 visitors.
Each key area is considering three embedded themes to ensure they use the Games to maximise the opportunities in all areas. These embedded themes are: volunteering, skills and events
