Pre-Games Training Camps

Around the UK

Over 600 facilities from around the UK are included in the Pre-Games Training Camps Guide.

We hope that many of you will have attended the launch in Beijing of our Pre-Games Training Camps Guide. For those National Olympic Committees and National Paralympic Committees who were unable to attend the launch information on the Guide will be sent out shortly.

The London 2012 NOC and NPC Relations team have played a central role in ensuring the training camps are fit for purpose.

Our intention is to provide a service that ensures teams competing in London 2012 at the Olympic Games or Paralympic Games have the opportunity to train, prepare and experience the best the UK can offer.

Compiling the Guide

Facilities across the UK were invited to apply for inclusion in the Guide through an open application process which ran from 24 July 2006 to 31 January 2007.

In response to this application process, LOCOG received over 1,000 submissions from facilities across the whole of the UK. All applications were assessed against a standard set of criteria for Olympic sports (PDF, 32kB) and a standard set of criteria for Paralympic Sports (PDF, 53kB), which included consideration of sport-specific requirements (PDF, 362kB).

Final decisions were announced in March 2008 for Olympic sports and May 2008 for Paralympic sports.

LOCOG was assisted in assessing submissions by National Governing Bodies (NGBs), who provided sport-specific feedback; and national and regional sports councils, who conducted additional site visits as required.

The whole process was overseen by a steering group, made up of the British Olympic Association, the British Paralympic Association, the English Institute of Sport and the sports councils of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

Late inclusion in the Guide

The deadline for UK sports facilities to register themselves for inclusion in the 'Pre Games Training Camp Guide' has now passed.

LOCOG will consider late applications from facilities that:

  • can cater for sports not currently well-represented in the Guide;
  • are new-build facilities or improved facilities due for completion by 1 January 2011;
  • are recognised centres of excellence; or
  • applied before the original deadline but were awaiting final planning or funding guarantees.
