Gary Verity, Executive Chair of the Yorkshire Committee for the London 2012 Games:
“With Pre Games Training Camps already signed for the region, Yorkshire businesses winning contracts through the London 2012 supply chain and Yorkshire’s sporting heroes like Jessica Ennis and Alistair Brownlee inspiring young children to take part in sport we are already seeing the Games being used to provide opportunities for the region.

“I am delighted to be taking a lead role in Yorkshire Gold and look forward to making Yorkshire and Humber a great place to enjoy the Games.”

Achieving our vision

We will concentrate on five Golden Opportunities to achieve our vision:

  • Becoming a world leading sporting region: Yorkshire already has a number of world class sporting facilities where top athletes are training for the 2012 games. We will support the development of the region as a centre of excellence for coaching and a base for Olympic training camps.  We aim to get more people of all abilities playing more sport and being more physically active than ever before. We will provide opportunities for young people to play more sport in schools and the community.
  • Active and engaged communities: We will use the positive messages of the Olympic and Paralympic games to encourage more people into volunteering. We want to see people of all abilities, especially young people , inspired to volunteer in their own communities. We want to raise skills levels as a result.
  • A carnival of culture: We want to see more participation in cultural events and an enhanced profile of what Yorkshire and Humber have to offer. We will do this by delivering a distinct and imaginative cultural programme in the run up to the games as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
  • Tourism potential: We want to use the 2012 games to attract more visitors to the region and raise our profile at home and abroad. We will stage major events in the region and will make the Yorkshire and Humber a great place to enjoy the games.
  • Winners in business: We want to maximise the commercial opportunities presented by the 2012 games. We will encourage local businesses to be more innovative and competitive. This will increase productivity for the region.

Planning and delivery – making it happen

We work closely with a regional network of partners who specialise in business, tourism, sport and culture. We have steering groups who look at specific topics and have nominated a series of lead partners who champion different areas of our strategy.
