East Midlands

By ‘Championing the East Midlands’ we will create a lasting economic, social and sporting legacy for the region from the London 2012 Games.
Jeff Moore, Chair of the East Midlands Steering Group for the 2012 Games (Chief Executive of emda):
'The East Midlands is committed to playing its part in helping London deliver an inspirational Games in 2012. We want to provide opportunities for all our citizens to engage with and experience the Games. This could be through volunteering, winning contracts to supply goods or services or through enjoying an event as part of a wide ranging Cultural Olympiad programme.’

Achieving the vision

The East Midlands Strategy For the 2012 Games has six key activity areas:

  • Business - Ensuring local businesses are successful in bidding for 2012 contracts, ensuring they have the support and awareness to access these opportunities.
  • Children and young people - Maximising the opportunities for children and young people to be a part of the 2012 Games, including participation in sport and cultural activities.
  • Culture - Celebrating the region’s cultural diversity through the delivery of the East Midlands Cultural Olympiad, running showcase from 2008 up to 2012.
  • Health - Using the Games to raise awareness of the positive aspects of leading a healthy and active lifestyle within sedentary individuals and communities.
  • Sport - Creating a legacy of more people taking part in sport and building on the region’s reputation for elite sport and major events
  • Visitor Economy - Growing visitor numbers to the region before, during and after the Games, securing a wider East Midlands visitor audience as a lasting legacy.

The strategy also has three embedded themes:

  • Employment and skills
  • Major events
  • Volunteering

Planning and delivery - making it happen

The East Midlands Management Board for the 2012 Games is responsible for directing the region’s activities.

There is a regional team led by Tracy Croft co-ordinating the delivery of the strategy along with key partners. There are also five county steering groups created and delivering on the region’s key activity areas.
