Volunteers are the lifeblood of London 2012

Test events are absolutely essential to our preparation for the London 2012 Games next year. As the London Prepares series continues – with Basketball and BMX among the latest test events – I wanted to say a few words about the importance of volunteers.

London 2012 Organising Committee Director of Paralympic Integration Chris Holmes meets a group of volunteer hopefuls at one of the selection process events which have taken place around the UK.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of London 2012. The fact that we need 70,000 Games Makers to volunteer during the Games is evidence of this! We received an overwhelming 250,000 Games Maker applications, and it’s wonderful to know that so many people have been inspired by the Games to volunteer and engage in a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Almost 15,000 budding Games Makers are also taking part in our sports testing programme, the London Prepares series. Between May 2011 and May 2012 they are volunteering across several London 2012 Organising Committee departments, from Sport to Technology, Press Operations to Workforce and Transport to Event Services.

I’ve been incredibly inspired by the passion, energy and commitment that volunteers have shown at the test events so far. Without them, there’s no way we would be able to test our Games-time processes and procedures so thoroughly. We’ve got a great foundation to build on when the Games kick off on 27 July 2012 – bring on next summer!

If you've taken part as a volunteer in a London 2012 test event, we'd love to hear about your experiences. Why not add your comments to this blog and tell the whole world about playing your part in preparing for the greatest show on earth?
