Kieron, Chief Archaeologist
A major focus of the archaeological work this week for Museum of London Archaeology Service (MoLAS) and Pre-Construct Archaeology (PCA) has been directed towards the recording of the remains of a World War II anti-aircraft gun battery in the north-west of

Although the research is in its early days, the standard references for this emplacement suggest it become active in 1940 and was upgraded in 1944 from 4.5 inch to 5.25 inch guns.

The targets were bombers flying at 20-25,000 feet. It also seems that this battery brought down the first German aircraft during the earliest major raid on London in September 1944. No doubt as the research continues we will begin to hear from people who remember this battery in action.
