And so, as you might have guessed, this is not a review of last night's performance (although personally I thought it was excellent and thoroughly enjoyed it) but more a question or observation which came to me half way through.
We were sitting there, in what I believe to be one of London's oldest parks, surrounded by what I imagine to be quite successful sensible people (myself not necessarily included), sipping wine (naturally) - in the rain, under an umbrella. Shivering! I mean seriously - only in England would we do that!
And we are watching a play about aristocracy - airs and graces, traditions and stereo-types. Rose gardens, tea, and cucumber sandwiches. Do these things even exist in real life anymore?
And yet we were all really enjoying ourselves - laughing and avoiding the rain drops.
I'm a firm believer in looking forward, embracing modern society, celebrating our diversity etc...- we really are a world in one city and we should showcase that - but last night definitely made me question the fact that some argue we should ignore all the tradition, pomp and circumstance? Isn't it something we should celebrate too??
